Gregg Berhalter confirms that Zack Steffen will start against Jamaica

US men’s national team manager Gregg Berhalter confirmed that Zack Steffen will start in goal against Jamaica during Tuesday night’s World Cup qualifier, after a fantastic performance against Mexico.

Last week, Berhalter chose Manchester City’s goalkeeper instead of New England Revolutions Matt Turner.

The competition between the couple has been intense, especially after Turner excelled when Steffen was out with a low back injury under the international window in October.

But the head coach revealed that he is confident in his decision and added that “we felt Zack was ahead.”

“There are a number of possessions we could keep in these games that we do not have. We think Zack is stronger with his feet. There is not much that separates them, but in this particular area, where we think it is a need area, we felt that Zack was ahead, says Berhalter.

“We are not hesitant to change goalkeepers; there is nothing we are negative about. We know that the competition is really tough and that they are pushing each other. And that is good.”

Steffen reiterated the coach’s thoughts that the competition is a “good thing”, and clarified that no tension or enmity exists between the two USMNT figures.

“We all want to play, and for the goalkeeper there is only one position. I really like Matt. I really like his energy. We have a really good friendship within the group. We have a good culture. We have a very strong group that pushes each other day in and day out. That’s exactly what we need to keep growing on the pitch. ”

Steffen marked his territory during Mexico’s match and made two significant saves in the first half that kept him at zero. His exceptional performance inspired teammates to push forward and seal the 2-0 victory.

“We keep asking the goalkeepers, ‘Can you make that, maybe two big saves you need to make?'” Said midfielder Walker Zimmerman.

“Mexico really had the big chance in the first half when they could have gone up. If he does not make that save, the game is very different.”

USMNT now enters the match against Jamaica as the leader of the Concacaf table with 14 points in seven matches, which is a narrow margin outside Mexico on goal difference.
