Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool will not catch Man City if they do not play “normally”

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the Reds will not have a chance to take Manchester City in the Premier League if they continue to play as they did in Leicester.

Klopp saw his side fall to a 1-0 loss at King Power Stadium on Tuesday night, with a single goal from ex-Everton winger Ademola Lookman securing the shock result.

That loss – only Liverpool’s second in the league this season – meant the Reds failed to cut City’s six-point lead. The reigning champions will also have the chance to extend that cushion to nine points, although they have played one more match, if they make ten straight wins when they face Brentford on Wednesday night.

Klopp is still convinced that Liverpool will have a chance to catch up if they play their “normal” game, but any further missteps make the task even more difficult.

“Sorry for that but it was not our plan to give City the chance to run away or anything,” he said via Sky Sports. “But if we play like [against Leicester], we do not have to think about catching up with City. But if we play our regular football, we can win regular football matches.

“We have to see how many points we can get and we will see what that means.”

The Reds start 2022 with a huge match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the day after City traveled to north London to face an improved Arsenal team.

“Chelsea and we play against each other so we can not both get the point,” said Klopp.

Should Arsenal win a shock win and Liverpool take maximum points against Chelsea, it would put the Merseysiders in a decent position to strike with a match in hand. But victory for City and defeat for Liverpool have the potential to narrow the gap to a much more difficult 12 points.
