Jurgen Klopp attacks Burnley in an unprovoked fight over the exchange rule

Jurgen Klopp has become the latest coach to criticize the Premier League’s decision not to allow the use of five substitutions this season – and has fired shots at Burnley in the process.

The clubs had to make five changes to the game instead of three at the end of the 2019/20 season after the restart and for the entire 2020/21 campaign.

While clubs are now still allowed to name nine players on their bench instead of the seven allowed pre-pandemics, they can only use three – a departure for much of the rest of Europe.

The clubs voted on the decision before the start of the season and were asked about it again recently in the middle of the Covid-19 outbreaks, but on both occasions did not receive the 14 votes required to approve the motion.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has been vocal in his concern over the rule, and Liverpool’s Klopp has joined his compatriot to criticize the decision.

“A top-class player in England plays in the Premier League around 38 matches”, Klopp began.

“Cup matches – two cup competitions – so you may not go to the final, but let’s just add another five, that’s 43. They have matches with the national team, pretty much everyone plays for their national teams, eight, nine or ten matches per year .

“Plus Champions League games – the further you go, the more matches there are. You count pretty fast, there are more than 50 matches or more. My first season here we played [Europa League] final – it was the 64th match [of the 2015/16 season], right?

“So yes, you have troops, but there are some key players who will just be out [of the lineup] when they are damaged.

“But the decision [regarding substitutes] is done. We realized again at the management meeting that this was the case. The decision is made by 14 clubs. I think you need 14 votes to change that. There is something wrong.

? “Burnley I’m not sure how many players of them play international football, when our players have three games they have no game.”

“As an example, Burnley, I’m not sure how many players play international football. When our players have three matches {on international service]they have no match. So they play 38 Premier League matches, two cups – three or four more games – so it’s 42.

“So we’re talking about an issue that some clubs definitely have, some players definitely have, but it’s decided by other teams. And because we’re doing a kind of competition, it’s like ‘no, they’re definitely better than us’ and stuff. and it’s a real problem because it’s the right decision [to allow five substitutes] especially at this moment because if you take back players after Covid infection or damage and because of the games you have to play, you have to play them immediately.

“And then they’re out again because you can not get rid of them after 60 minutes because you have to change other things. It’s a real problem.
