Jurgen Klopp “could not be more proud” of Liverpool’s victory in Milan

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken out about his pride in the red Champions League win 2-1 in Milan on Tuesday night.

The Serie A leaders needed a win to have any chance of qualifying for the last sixteen, while Liverpool had already topped the group but also played for a place in history: a win would make them the first English team to win all their six group games.

They fell behind to a Fikayo Tomori goal, but Mohamed Salah’s goal and Divock Origi’s nod turned the match around and Liverpool went on to win despite making eight changes to their starting line-up.

When he spoke to BT Sport after the match, Klopp was asked how proud he was of his side.

“A lot, because of the sixth game to be honest,” he began. “I think when I said before the match I chose the line-up because we want to win the match, everyone was like ‘hmm’.

“But we needed healthy legs today, we needed the desire to play this match, it was really difficult in the hectic schedule. We must always be fiery before the next match.

“What the guys did tonight, I could not be more proud, it was an incredible match. I’m so happy about so many things I saw tonight.

“We won the match but the performance was absolutely outstanding. With 21 shots – 21 times we ended a situation – so many situations where we played exceptionally well and defended with passion and organization.”

Nat Phillips came in as a center-back and won his fight with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and even beat the legendary striker with a Cruyff turn in his own box.

Klopp was caught on camera when he reacted happily to the trick from the high defender and was asked about it after the match.

“Nat in that position, I did not see it – it was only in the distance”, Klopp admitted. “But I’m really looking forward to seeing it for the first time. We talked about it in the locker room and it was tricky.”
