Jurgen Klopp returns to take charge of Liverpool for the Shrewsbury match

Liverpool have confirmed that Jurgen Klopp will be back in the dugout for Sunday’s FA Cup match against Shrewsbury Town in the third round.

The Reds coach had been missing from the game since he tested positive for Covid-19 on New Year’s Day – missed Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea as a result.

While Klopp is back, his assistant Pepijn Lijnders is still isolated after also testing positive.

Liverpool have been one of the clubs hard hit by the huge increase in Covid cases across the UK, with the large volume of players and staff tested positive, which led to the club’s training facilities being closed for a few days this week.

Peter Krawietz spoke at the press conference before the match and discussed how the club handled the closure of the training facilities:

“Training ground closed and closed means no one can come here, of course,” he said. “But we try to stay in touch during these times with our players, as we did during the lockdown period a year ago or even longer. We try to use the modern media options to stay in touch, one.

“The other thing is, of course, that there are no groups that can group themselves, it means that everyone is on their own.

“Thanks to our really, really good working athletic department around the team of Andreas Kornmayer, we were able to find solutions for the players. So those who got to go out, they could run outdoors.

“If you are not allowed due to quarantine at home, we tried to work with these players as well, giving them an individual program day by day. That’s how we tried to keep them in shape.”

Liverpool fans will hope that Joel Matip, Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino will all be available for Sunday’s match after also spending a period in isolation.
