Juventus 4-2 Zenit: Player rating

Juventus sealed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a comfortable 4-2 victory over Zenit St Petersburg in Turin on Tuesday night.

Juve made a dominant start to the process, where Paulo Dybala saw a low shot tipped over the post before opening the scoring two minutes later, shooting the ball into the ground and sending it curved into the net from Leonardo Bonucci’s shot.

Despite having a free kick in a decent position 26 minutes in, Bianconeri tried a variation that brought the ball through to the other end of the penalty area.

Dybala came close again with a fine curling effort after half time and doubled up from the penalty spot shortly afterwards after Federico Chiesa stumbled by Claudinho. The Argentine missed his first kick but the referee strictly ordered that it be withdrawn due to intrusion, and the 27-year-old made no mistake the second time he asked.

Wojciech Szczesny then made two good low saves before Weston McKennie hit the crossbar at the other end after a crazy dribbling.

A minute later, Chiesa showed a wonderful calmness by pulling the ball out of the defender’s reach and shooting low over the goalkeeper into the opposite corner to seal the win. The electric Italian saw another effort cleared by the line before Alvaro Morata squeezed home to round off a move he started.

Sardar Azmoun poked a second in stoppage time for Zenit, but it was another consolation.

Wojciech Szczesny (GK) – 7/10 – Could not do anything when Bonucci’s nod swirled over him. Good saves to deny low shots from Claudinho and Malcom with Juve 2-1 up.

Danilo (RB) – 7/10 – Solid if not spectacular at the rear. Not really tested by Claudinho.

Leonardo Bonucci (CB) – 5/10 – Led assist for Dybala, although he was not sure he meant it. Strange self-goal. Subbed.

Matthijs de Ligt (CB) – 6/10 – Generally solid but all at sea for Zenit’s others.

Alex Sandro (LB) – 7/10 – Similar to Danilo. Solid night work.

Federico Chiesa (RM) – 8/10 – Brought to life after the break, won the penalty and scored a nice goal.

Weston McKennie (CM) – 8/10 – All action display in midfield. So unlucky to hit the crossbar after a Messi-like run.

Manuel Locatelli (CM) – 7/10 – Kept things ticking over with a 95% pass result. Booked and subbed.

Federico Bernardeschi (LM) – 8/10 – Actually pretty good. Got an assist and posed a threat all the time.

Paulo Dybala (ST) – 9/10 – Wonderful, wonderful individual achievement. Scored two goals and got the assist for Morata. Could have gotten about three more of each.

Alvaro Morata (ST) – 7/10 – Bad miss from Dybala’s cut-back. Good job in the run-up to the penalty. Finally came up with the points protocol but it was a characteristically mixed bag.

Adrien Rabiot (LM) – 6/10 – Those who follow the 90mins Juventus rating know that we usually do not get Rabiot with more than 1/10, so this is a sharp improvement.

Arthur (CM) – 6/10

Daniele Rugani (CB) – N / A

Dejan Kulusevski (ST) – N / A
