Kai Havertz got a broken finger in the win over Tottenham

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Kai Havertz broke his finger when he scored his team’s opening goal in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham on Wednesday night.

The German national team player opened the scoring after just five minutes of the first round of the Carabao Cup semi-final at Stamford Bridge, when he held on to Marcos Alonso’s pass and saw his goal-oriented cannon in the net outside Davinson Sanchez

The goal, however, came at a cost, with Havertz’s momentum sending him sprawling over the top of the committed Hugo Lloris and uncomfortably into the floor-covered Sanchez.

When Chelsea’s celebration had disappeared, the forward received long treatment on the sidelines before he eventually returned with a bandage on his fingers. However, Tuchel chose to replace him with his compatriot Timo Werner at half time.

Tuchel explained his decision after the match: “Kai has a problem with his finger, I think he broke his finger.

“It was awful and he played through the pain, but the pain got bigger and bigger for every movement, for every touch from the opponent. He survived at half time and then we needed to change.”

Havertz shared photos on his Instagram story after the match that seemed to show that he had broken the little finger on his right hand.

Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta was also forced out in the second half, but Tuchel allayed fears that it was due to some serious injury.

“Azpi [Azpilicueta] says that his was just cramps and not an injury, which would be the good news. We trust him from here, so hopefully it’s just cramps, he said.

Chelsea hope Havertz can play through the pain with the squad still exhausted due to injuries and Covid-19. It was revealed before the Spurs match that both N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva had tested positive for the virus, while Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah are away with respective hamstring injuries and Ben Chilwell has just had surgery on his injured ACL.

There was some good news when Werner returned from his own corona period, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek came off the bench after three weeks away with an injury and positive test.
