England midfielder Kalvin Phillips has revealed that he received a congratulatory message from AC Milan, Juventus and Italian legend Andrea Pirlo one day before the European Championship 2020 final.
Phillips was an integral part of Gareth Southgate’s team during the tournament, and flourished alongside West Ham captain Declan Rice in a formidable midfield duo.
The three Lions enjoyed a fantastic run-through to the final, but could not finally get the job done at Wembley when Italy won a penalty shootout – extending England’s run without a major international trophy beyond 55 years.
Phillips has long been called “Yorkshire Pirlo” by fans of his club side, Leeds United, and he has now revealed that he received a message from the legendary midfielder himself a day before the European Championship 2020 final – and sincerely wishes him luck. even though he would face Italy.
“It’s always nice to get recognition from some incredible players,” said Phillips, quoted by the Telegraph. “The night before the final, Jack Harrison, who used to play in New York City with him, sent me a video of Pirlo.
“It was a video for me that said ‘good luck in the final and he wishes me all the best’ so it was very nice.
“It was a very nice feeling and obviously I thought it would say something about Italy but, no, he wished me luck – full respect for that. I just got the video and I was like ‘oh my god’. I” have never met him, I would like to meet him if I am to be honest. I’ve seen him be a very cool guy, but I’ve heard he’s a nice guy too.
“Having someone on the other side, in the other team, wishes you luck and especially such a player, it’s always a great feeling.”

“It’s been a good year. Obviously I did not expect to be in an English jersey, never mind doing this well,” Phillips continued. “I live in Leeds and they call me ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’. I’m a big Leeds fan and I have a lot of people who come to me for autographs and stuff.
“But now it happens when I travel elsewhere. I traveled to London a few weeks ago by train and there were people at the station asking for photographs.
“It was a little weird. I used to be able to go under the radar – but not anymore. I do not mind it. It’s part of the job and it’s part of my success and the team’s success. It means I’m doing something right,
