Kellyn Acosta accuses Colorado Rapids of blocking European relocation after LAFC transfer

Kellyn Acosta has accused the former club Colorado Rapids of blocking a transfer to Europe after his transfer to Los Angeles FC.

The 26-year-old midfielder made a big-selling move to LAFC on Friday in a deal worth up to $ 1.5 million in General Allocation Money (GAM) for Rapids.

But Acosta – a 45-time American national team player – had long wanted a move to Europe, and even said as late as April that it was necessary to cross the Atlantic to secure his national team future.

A report on Burgundy Wave suggested that Rapids was working to extend Acosta’s contract, but that the two parties could not adapt. It also stated that most of the rumored interest from Europe was just “smoke” and that the real offers came from other MLS teams.

But in response to a Twitter post sharing the article, Acosta has backtracked, suggesting he was forced out the door at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and had his European dream blocked.

“This story is sad. CO pushed me out,” the midfielder tweeted. “They had an offer for me on the table from abroad and ongoing interests and chose to change me.”

According to Burgundy Wave, a Rapids spokesman confirmed that no offers came from Europe when Acosta’s deal with LAFC was completed. Three hours after the deal went through, in principle, a European club asked for a free loan of one year with a call option.

Later, Acosta followed up and tweeted: “Regardless, I enjoyed my time in Colorado and was with a large group of players and staff. We achieved things that most people would not believe. I wish them the best for the future. I am excited for my next adventure!”

About his upcoming venture with LAFC, he said: “To LAFC fans, I’m excited for the next chapter! I’ll give everything I have for Black and Gold!”

LAFC and Acosta add further spice to the matter and start their MLS campaign 2022 at home against Rapids on 26 February.
