Kellyn Acosta will leave Colorado Rapids to join LAFC

Colorado Rapids midfielder Kellyn Acosta will move to Los Angeles FC this month, according to a report.

The 26-year-old has been a key figure in Denver since moving from FC Dallas in 2018 and helped Rapids top the Western Conference last season. He has also played heavily for Gregg Berhalters USA men’s national team and has so far played 45 international matches.

Acosta has long talked about its desire to try its hand in Europe. In April last year, he told The Athletic: “I think in order to get further in my career, I have to be in Europe. It will help me take the next step to be where I want to be and be part of the national team. I hope for a great year and hope to do so soon. “

But it seems that the midfielder will not cross the Atlantic. Instead, according to MLSsoccer, Acosta will join LAFC in a deal worth up to $ 1.5 million in General Allocation Money (GAM). Rapids will receive $ 1.1 million in advance, with an additional $ 400k coming if certain parameters are met.

Should the deal go through, it would be the second time in less than a year that the two clubs change midfielders for high transfer fees in connection with MLS-to-MLS deals.

In July 2021, Canadian international Mark-Anthony Kaye moved in the opposite direction, joining Rapids for $ 1 million GAM, an international list spot and other incentives.

Acosta’s departure would leave Robin Fraser with another big hole to fill in midfield. As reported by 90min, USMNT prospect Cole Bassett is also about to join Feyenoord on loan next week, with the Dutch giants having an option to make the move permanent.

That said, Rapids still has Kaye, club captain Jack Price, and new signing Max Alves among their midfield options.

Colorado begins its 2022 away season against Comunicaciones of Guatemala on February 17 in the first round of their Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals.
