Kieran Tierney insists Arsenal have “a long way to go” to secure a Champions League return

Kieran Tierney has dampened Arsenal’s expectations for the rest of the season following their recent form run, acknowledging that they still have a lot to do to secure a top-four finish.

The Gunners last played Champions League football in the 2016/17 season – Arsene Wenger’s penultimate campaign as head of the club. They spent the next four years in the Europa League before finishing eighth in the Premier League last term meant missing European football altogether this year.

Mikel Arteta’s team is finally starting to show something promising after two years with the Spaniard at the helm, who is currently four in the table and six points ahead of rivals Tottenham – even though Spurs have three games left.

Tierney spoke to the media after Arsenal’s impressive 5-0 win over Norwich on the second day of Christmas, and insisted that there is still a lot of work ahead of him and his teammates.

“It’s obviously what every Arsenal fan, player and staff wants, but there is a long way to go,” he said of Arsenal’s Champions League hopes, via the Evening Standard.

“We can not get too far ahead of ourselves yet. There are big games going on and there will be many games, so there is still a long way to go.

“We have a very young team and it’s great to see. Hopefully for several years to come we will all play together and grow together. I think you can see that in the last year or so.”

Arsenal were due to face Wolves on Tuesday, December 28, but the visitors were successful in their request to have the match postponed due to a Covid-19 outburst and concerns about injuries.

This means that Arteta’s men will get an extra rest before their mammoth match at home against Manchester City on New Year’s Day.
