Kieran Trippier has revealed his desire to move back to the north of England, and not the riches offered by Newcastle, was the reason he decided to switch Madrid to Tyneside.

The England international has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract worth £ 100,000 a week with the Magpies, after spending a few years in Spain with Atletico Madrid, where he won a La Liga title.

He is Newcastle’s first major signing since their new owner took control at the end of last year and he joins a team that is currently scrapping to save its Premier League status, and is in 19th place in the table with just one win all season.

“There was another interest but I made it clear that I wanted to come back north,” Trippier revealed.

“If people say it’s about money, everyone has a right to their opinion, but the players I’ve played with and the managers I’ve worked under, they know what kind of character I am.

“I will fight for the shirt and I will enjoy the challenge. I have my reasons for coming here, I know why and money is not one of them.”

The move for Trippier back to the Premier League, where he previously played for Burnley and Tottenham. England’s rivals Reece James, Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all key players in their respective clubs and Trippier says he does not believe the move from the heights of Spain’s top league to England’s depth will hurt his international chances.

He added: “Every opportunity to represent my country is an honor. Just because I have moved to Newcastle, nothing has changed. Gareth [Southgate] and I will get in touch soon. I do not give up hope of England.

“I want to do well for my club and show him that I’m still playing at the highest level. I’m still ambitious, I still want to join the English team. I know I’m facing some good backs in the form of Reece James, Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold but I’m still in very good shape and if I can play well for Newcastle, who knows on the international front? ”

Trippier made his Magpies debut in their FA Cup match with Cambridge on Saturday afternoon.
