The Premier League has confirmed that Leeds United’s match against Aston Villa on Tuesday, December 28, has been postponed due to a fall by Covid-19 in the home team.
The news comes after Leeds’ match against Liverpool was also postponed on Boxing Day.
Aston Villa will play on the second day of Christmas – and welcome Chelsea to Villa Park for kick-off at 5.30pm – despite their manager Steven Gerrard not being able to attend due to the Covid Protocols.
A statement from the Premier League said: “Following a request from Leeds United, the Premier League board met today and unfortunately agreed to postpone the club’s home game against Aston Villa, which will be played at 17:30 GMT on Tuesday 28 December.
“The board was able to make its decision before the match to provide clarity to the affected clubs and their fans. We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption to the supporters’ party plans.
“The suspension is a result of the ongoing cases of covid-19 and the injuries in Leeds that saw their Boxing Day match against Liverpool canceled. The board accepted the request for a postponement as the club does not have the necessary number of players available for the match (13 outfielders and a goalkeeper).
“The league is aware that the decisions this week to postpone matches will disappoint fans and understand their frustrations at a special time of year when fans are looking forward to participating and watching football matches.
“The league strives to provide as much clarity as possible, but unfortunately postponements sometimes have to be made at short notice, as safety is our priority. Where possible, the league will strive to keep supporters updated if matches end up in the risk zone on a match day. “
The news comes as a welcome relief for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds, who, in addition to the Covid case, are facing a huge injury crisis. Bielsa is currently without the services of his two stars Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford due to long-term ailments.
