Liverpool are unlikely to sell Divock Origi in January

Liverpool are not expected to sanction backup striker Divock Origi’s departure this month if they do not receive an offer they can not turn down.

Origi’s future has long been in the air after years of limited minutes behind superstar trio Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, and Diogo Jota’s emergence as a first reserve has only intensified rumors that Origi could be sold.

A number of Premier League teams have been tipped to move for Origi, with Newcastle United’s new riches as one of the most rejected suitors.

But according to the Liverpool Echo, a huge offer will be required to tempt them to sell Origi and they plan to keep him in their ranks for the rest of the season.

Origi’s contract expires this summer, although Liverpool have an option to extend it by another 12 months if the Belgian makes a certain number of starts in the Premier League.

He has not yet started a match in the league this season, but he can get more appearances with Salah and Mane away in the Africa Cup of Nations. How many he would have to earn to trigger that clause is unknown.

Sky Sports initially suggested a £ 10m fee could be enough to land Origi, but the latest report says Liverpool have acknowledged how much Newcastle have paid for 31-year-old Kieran Trippier – £ 12m plus – and would likely demand a similar fee for Origi.

As Liverpool are reluctant to sell, Origi has been advised to wait until the summer to evaluate his options, as more suitors will come forward to try to get him – possibly for free.

His representatives have held talks with three teams in Italy, although Origi prefers to remain in the Premier League.
