Manchester United are facing the possibility of paying millions in cash to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff, after recently rewarding them with new contracts.
Mike Phelan signed new terms last month while Michael Carrick – now interim manager until United find a coach to watch the season – is also believed to have signed a new contract with first-team coach Kieran McKenna and goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis.
They are each believed to have signed new three-year contracts, just three weeks before Solskjaer was eventually fired, according to Mail.
United have garnered criticism from their own fan base due to their lack of foresight and future planning, and these contracts are another example of how officials fail on the football side at Old Trafford.
When a manager’s successor to Solskjaer is appointed, they will most likely bring their own coaching staff, which would probably mean the end for, among others, United’s pillars Phelan and Carrick. While they are being started up, compensation will have to be paid out and it could cost United quite a penny.
The Red Devils have been linked with a myriad of managers over the past week or so, but it looks like Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino has the most support from the Glazer family. 90min understands that both the Argentine and Brendan Rodgers would be prepared to leave PSG and Leicester respectively if United approached.
For now, Carrick and Phelan will be given a chance to turn things around and United are not opposed to giving them more control over the squad if the results improve.
First up for United in the life after Solskjaer is a Champions League trip to Villarreal on Tuesday, where a victory would strengthen their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage in a close group F.
