Man Utd maintains focus on Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment with Ralf Rangnick set for interim role

Manchester United are set to continue the hunt for Mauricio Pochettinho as their next permanent coach, despite the impending appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim.

90min has learned that Pochettino, the current coach of Paris Saint-Germain, will remain the club’s top scorer for the summer of 2022, with Rangnick currently not being considered for the role after the end of the current season.

Rangnick will instead take on a consulting role with United for a first two-year period when the current season ends.

Until further notice, 63-year-old Rangnick will take over from first team coach Michael Carrick, who was involved after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired after their loss to Watford.

Sources close to United have confirmed for 90 minutes that they retain their interest in landing Pochettino – despite Paris Saint Germain avoiding their initial approach.

We have been told that PSG will not have a deal for Pochettino unless they have a succession plan in place. Their main target is Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane has not worked since leaving Real Madrid in May this year, and his first idea was to have 12 months left from the match, but now PSG are working hard to convince him to take the lead in the French capital.

United had themselves consulted Zidane’s people in recent weeks, but he made it clear that his family would not be keen on moving to England, although the chance to take the lead at Parc Des Princes is another suggestion.

PSG general manager Jean-Claude Blanc is close to Zidane, and he plays a crucial role in trying to secure a deal with his friend and the most important discussions are over when a deal will start.

We confirmed earlier this week that PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi was far from happy with the knowledge that Pochettino wanted to join United – but it is understood that the chance to land Zidane has dampened his irritation.

United are now continuing the hunt for Pochettino, but the Rangnick appointment means they can wait for the Argentine to finish the current season. Sources believe that United would rather secure a deal for Pochettino sooner rather than later.
