Man Utd’s Ella Toone offers a bright future

Manchester United striker Ella Toone continued her outstanding start to the season by scoring a hat-trick in the service of England this week in a World Cup qualifier for women against Latvia.

Toone is already a star at club level and is also becoming an increasingly important part of England’s lineup. In addition, she represents a very bright future for both with her only 22 years.

After the 10-0 victory, the Lioness’ boss Sarina Wiegman suggested that Toone’s ability gives her the potential to become one of the best if she works hard enough for it.

“Ella is a very talented player. I think she can do well because the whole team is doing well. I do not know how good she will be – it’s up to her. But she’s really talented, it’s obvious.” Wiegman explained at a post-match press conference.

Toone has been excellent for Manchester United for three years. She joined the girls’ academy there at a very young age but was later forced to pursue a career elsewhere due to the lack of a senior squad at the time – she was not the only one who had to leave.

Toone played first-team football for Blackburn at the age of 16 and impressed enough to be picked up by Manchester City, before returning “home” to United in 2018 while still a teenager when the club finally launched a senior team for women.

Now into the club’s fourth season, Toone has made more appearances and scored more goals for United than anyone else. She also holds the joint club record for most goals in a match and most consecutive league matches made in, and is the first United player to become a consistent part of England’s squad from having previously been unlimited.

? “I’m over the moon! Making a goal for England is a fantastic achievement but getting a hat trick was really special for me – and a proud moment for me and my family. It’s a day I will never forget!”

Versatility makes Toone a great asset. She can play anywhere over the front line, right or left, or through the middle as a “number 10” or “false nine”, and has the ability to either score a goal (or more) herself or unlock a defense with a sharp pass .

It was her consistent ball that got the ball rolling for United on what could have been a nervous opening night for the season last month and has maintained that quality ever since. More than ever before, she has stepped up from the supporting role to a lead role.

A hat trick for England, which she described in the comments after the match as something she “will never forget”, is a welcome next step in her further development and she will only get better.
