USWNT and OL Reign star Megan Rapinoe insists that increased player salaries could revolutionize NWSL to become one of the most successful leagues, saying, “We need to start allowing players to have financial freedom and power over their own lives.”
Rapinoe spoke with Yael Averbuch West at 90mins Football Americana to express his concern about the National Women’s Soccer League and suggested how it could be improved to reach its full potential.
The league underwent several changes during the 2021 season after several current and former players spoke out to expose the harassment and abuse that is going on within the team.
The allegations forced NWSL to launch independent investigations that led to the resignation of North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley, Washington Spirit chief Richie Burke, OL Reigns’ Farid Benstiti and Chicago Red Stars leader Rory Dames. NWSL Commissioner Lisa Baird also resigned.
Although many positive changes occurred, Rapinoe argues that more needs to be done to make players feel comfortable and in control.
“Again, I think it has to start with the players’ salaries. If the players do not have financial freedom and they do not have financial power over their own lives, then they will just always, in some way, be out of balance with the ownership or with the team. They will always be threatened with being manipulated, they will always be threatened with being abused in a variety of ways.
“So for me, it’s the ability to say, ‘I do not need this shit.’ I’m going to another team. “And actually having the power to do that will require the team to be better and require coaches to behave better and require the team, just in general, to treat that player better and treat them in a more professional manner. “So I think it has to start there. We have to start giving players financial freedom and power over their own lives.”

The USWNT player added that the professionalism of each club needs to be improved to attract international talent.
“The training facilities need to be better. I think for the most part now, I say this because my team that played on a baseball field last year, which I do not think anyone would be surprised at is completely unacceptable to everyone, everyone knows, completely unacceptable. So I think the overall standard for the league and the environments and the training environments and everyday life needs to get better. “
