Mikel Arteta admits that Arsenal can be active in the January transfer window

Mikel Arteta has admitted that Arsenal can be active in the January transfer window as the head coach makes sure to fine-tune his squad and consolidate his top four place.

Although they have taken advantage of the fact that their rivals have had their matches postponed as a result of the Covid-19 outburst, Arsenal unexpectedly end up in the Champions League places in the middle of the season.

Arteta spoke before the match against Norwich before the Second Days and admitted that he could be tempted to do business if a suitable deal arises, with the Gunners well in the hunt for a top four position.

“If you can adjust what you need during that period, which is not easy, it would be very helpful,” he said, quoted by The Guardian.

“We are working on it to see what necessities we can have, and if we can find the right solutions to it.”

Arteta was also asked whether the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations could also affect his plans, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Thomas Partey, Nicolas Pepe and Mohamed Elneny all absent as they represent their countries in Cameroon.

“I do not think we will be able to recruit players just for this short period of time,” he said. “I think it’s a bit unrealistic. But we’ll sit down now and make the right decision if we can.”

Asked if he has received guarantees of financial support from the Arsenal hierarchy ahead of the second half of the season, Arteta added:

“No, I think they have always shown support. Since I have been here, it has always been so.

“We have tried to explain the plan that we want to put in place really openly. Instead of how much money we are going to spend, how much money we are investing in the team and in the football club and going step by step.

“Each case will be treated differently, and each situation will be treated differently. But the ambition is only one and that is to try to be the best team.”
