MLS announces start date for the 2022 season and schedule format

Major League Soccer has announced that the 2022 season starts on Saturday, February 26.

That date marks the earliest start ever on an MLS season, designed to fit the international football calendar 2022 and the World Cup, which begins on November 21 in Qatar.

The regular season will run until October 9, where the entire league is set to play on Decision Day. The MLS Cup play-offs will then take place for three consecutive weeks before the final on 5 November.

The final is scheduled two weeks before the release date for players on November 14 for athletes called up to represent their countries in the international tournament.

MLS also communicated its efforts to avoid scheduling matches during international breaks in March, June and September.

The league will reveal the full schedule for the regular season 2022 later this year.

MLS also announced that it will make changes to each conference when the newest expansion team Charlotte FC joins the league.

Nashville SC will now compete in the Western Conference to allow Charlotte FC to join the Eastern Conference. The change ensures that each table holds 14 teams each.
