Pep Guardiola calls the goalkeeper the most important position

Pep Guardiola has claimed that the goalkeeper is the most important position on the pitch, and also describes Manchester City stopper Ederson as one of the club’s biggest signings ever.

When Guardiola first joined Cityzens in 2016, they endured some electoral difficulties between the sticks. Joe Hart was soon pushed out of the club but his replacement, Claudio Bravo, experienced an error-prone first season.

These problems were solved by the signing of Ederson for 35 million pounds in 2017. Since coming to Manchester, he has barely missed a match, which has helped City win a number of major awards.

Guardiola reflected on the Brazilian’s success before his team’s Premier League meeting with Leicester City on Monday, and Guardiola was full of praise.

“Absolutely, I totally agree,” he replied when asked if Ederson was one of City’s best signings.

“He has been consistent during this period. I had a feeling that in the last three, four matches he has even taken a step forward.

“I had a feeling when he came back from his last international break with Brazil that he was a little low.

“Sometimes it happens. In a season it is impossible to persevere all the time. But during the last two, three weeks of training and matches, I feel that we have seen the best Eddie we have.

“The work of Richard [Wright] and Xabi [Mancisidor] do is incredible. The city has incredible staff. Xabi was here before I came and how they improve “keepers are incredible.”

Guardiola went on to emphasize the importance of the goalkeeper position in the modern game.

“Eddie is a very important player for us. I would say that ‘the goalkeeper is the most important player on the team, more than a striker,’ the goalkeeper is fundamental.

“Eddie has been brilliant since coming to Manchester.”
