Pep Guardiola has revealed that Phil Foden was removed as a “precaution” during Man City’s 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.
The foot has just returned to action after an ankle knock, and he was awarded another blow a bit into the team’s final Champions League match of the season.
The English national team player was replaced by Raheem Sterling at half time in the middle of the week, where Guardiola explained the change at his press conference after the match.
“Phil had problems at the start of the match with his ankle. He struggled a bit so he was taken off as a precaution and we put Raheem in his position.”
The foot has suffered from several fitness problems this season and missed the first four matches of the Premier League campaign with foot problems before suffering an ankle injury that recently occurred with England.
After playing, the 21-year-old has made some fantastic performances, scoring five goals and six assists from 16 games.
He was not the only injury that came out of the match either. Nathan Ake also received a slap when Guardiola revealed: “Nathan has back problems – we’ll see tomorrow.”
City were far from convincing in their defeat to Leipzig, although Guardiola changed their squad considerably. Starting midfielders Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte were both rested, as were Rodri, Ederson and Joao Cancelo.
City also dropped Kyle Walker to a red card towards the end after the right-back unnecessarily went through the back of Andre Silva.
It is not yet certain whether Foden will be in City’s next match – a Premier League meeting with Wolves on Saturday. Guardiola is likely to provide an update at its pre-match press conference.
