Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tests positive for Covid-19 before AFCON

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has tested positive for Covid-19 shortly after arriving in Cameroon for the Africa Cup of Nations, which casts doubt on his commitment to Gabon.

Aubameyang has not played for Arsenal since the beginning of December after a disciplinary offense was seen which continues to obscure his club future caused him to drop out of the squad.

But as captain, the 32-year-old was expected to play a major role for Gabon in his fifth AFCON tournament in a tough group along with Morocco, Ghana and the first-time qualifiers Comoros.

However, it has been widely reported that Aubameyang has returned a positive test for Covid-19 since landing in Cameroon. He had been to Dubai before traveling to the tournament and videos have now also appeared on social media where he is partying with colleague Mario Lemina.

Gabon will play their first group game against the Comoros on Monday, January 10, with isolation likely to exclude Aubameyang from the much tougher clash with Ghana four days later.

He is expected to be out of isolation and available when Gabon face Morocco in the third and final group stage match on January 18, which may prove crucial.

As for his club future, Aubameyang has been linked with a move in January to an ambitious Newcastle who are desperately trying to avoid relegation. It has also been reported in recent days that Arsenal have made a number of top European teams aware that he is available.

“To be successful, you have to be passionate about something and want to represent a club of this size, with its history. It is the lowest standard you have to bring,” Arteta said when discussing the ongoing issue just before Christmas.

“I will not ask anyone to put the ball in the top corner every time they hit it, but I will ask them to do the right things every day for this club.”
