Player rating as Serge Gnabry inspires easy win

Serge Gnabry took a hat-trick when Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 5-0 and took nine points over the top of the Bundesliga on Tuesday night.

The hosts actually created the best chance after a subdued opening of negotiations at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, but Omar Marmoush could only pull his shot outside after slipping into goal in the middle of the first half.

Bayern eventually began to force themselves and made their dominance pay off when Gnabry appeared to give them the lead five minutes before half-time. Early substitute Leroy Sané made a run from the halfway line before laying off against his compatriot, who bowed a sublime first effort in the top corner.

Stuttgart came flying out of the blocks in the second half and created two decent opportunities, but Wataro Endo could not convert a run post from close range and Philipp Forster finished a nice move by shooting straight at Manuel Neuer.

Die Schwaben had to pay moments later. Thomas Muller found Gnabry on the counter in the acre of space in the box, with the winger cutting in on his left foot and making no mistakes with the finish.

Three goals in just five minutes put the game to bed – and Gnabry was involved in all of them. First, the winger snapped to a loose pass and lifted the ball into Robert Lewandowski, who broke down on goal and slammed the goalkeeper in with extravagant ease.

The former Arsenal man was the provider of the productive pole again shortly afterwards – when he saw his low delivery converted – before hitting his hat trick and hitting the ball after Florian Muller played a cross like his feet.

There was still time for Muller to be forced to a good double save and Lewandowski to come within the post of his own hat trick, but it ended 5-0 to Bayern.

Manuel Neuer (GK) – 6/10 – Did not have much to do, but dominated his box and showed good handling.

Benjamin Pavard (RB) – 7/10 – Saw a decent effort off the boot diverting over. Solid back but a simple night job.

Niklas Sule (CB) – 8/10 – Really hearty, often sniffs away Marmoush’s runs. Read the game brilliantly.

Lukas Hernandez (CB) – 6/10 – Stuttgart had some joy through their side of the back line. Did not have much to do after the break.

Alphonso Davies (LB) – 6/10 – No easy time by Tanguy Coulibaly on Stuttgart’s right wing. Booked for a silly handball. Subbed.

Marc Roca (CM) – 6/10 – A first start to the season. Tried to sink deep, get on the ball and spray passes, with varying degrees of success. Won the ball well in the build-up to second. Subbed.

Jamal Musiala (CM) – 8/10 – Some very nice touches and showed his vision in raids ahead, although it was a bit easy sometimes. Made the defensive so, so good.

Thomas Muller (AM) – 7/10 – Another assist during the break, an easy pass to Gnabry. Produced a great turn later in the second half.
