Player rating when Los Blancos sails into the last sixteen

Real Madrid confirmed their progress to the Champions League round of 16 thanks to a comfortable 3-0 away win over Sheriff on Wednesday night.

The Moldovan National Division minnows shocked the world by beating Real in the Spanish capital on match day two, but there would be no repetition here with Carlo Ancelotti’s accusations of getting the job done with minimal hassle.

The hosts were determined in the defense in the initial exchanges but Los Blanco’s superior quality was obvious with Karim Benzema who got an early goal ruled for offside.

The sheriff’s opposition was eventually broken after half an hour when David Alaba’s free kick was deflected past Georgios Athanasiadis via a Cristiano refusal.

Real became more and more dominant as it progressed and just before the break they doubled their advantage in a sparkling way. A total of five players were involved in a free-floating move that ended exactly by Toni Kroos.

Just before the hour closed Real found a third through Benzema, who buzzed home outside the box after good work from Ferland Mendy.

After this, the away team largely looked the match without too much hassle, even though Cristiano hit the post with a blinking nod with just over 20 minutes left to play.

This is how the Real players rated …

Thibaut Courtois (GK) – 6/10 – Had a “save” to do. A relaxed night shift besides that.

Dani Carvajal (RB) – 7/10 – Bombed forward, proving he still has the explosiveness he was known for before injuries.

Eder Militao (CB) – 7/10 – A very light evening. The headline was a special highlight with the Sheriff going quite often.

David Alaba (CB) – 7/10 – Open the score with an exact free kick, although the deflection helped enormously.

Ferland Mendy (LB) – 7/10 – Good stuff. Set Benzema’s goal and make the left wing his own personal playground.

Toni Kroos (CM) – 8/10 – His finish in second place was beautiful – it will not be more accurate than that. Rolled back the years with some fantastic long passes.

Casemiro (CM) – 7/10 – He did what he does best and helped Real control things. One of his most impressive matches of the season.

Luka Modric (CM) – 7/10 – Be on it from the first signal tonight. A fantastic all-round midfield display.

Rodrygo (RW) – 7/10 – Always enthusiastic if it is a little raw. A potent creator, he finished with two key passes and had bad luck not getting an assist.

Karim Benzema (ST) – 8/10 – Linked things expertly, as he always does. Got his goal in the second half after a frustrating first period.

Vinicius Junior (LW) – 6/10 – Not quite as good as he has been in previous Champions League matches this season.

Marcelo (LB) – 6/10

Lucas Vazquez (RB) – 6/10

Nacho (CB) – 6/10

Marco Asensio (RW) – N / A

Antonio Blanco (CM) – N / A
