Player rating when the Blues denied the top spot in Group H.

Chelsea conceded a late equalizer to make a 3-3 draw against Zenit Saint Petersburg and destroy their hopes of topping Group H on Wednesday night, with Juventus’ victory over Malmö handing them over to second place and a likely tougher draw in the quarter-finals.

The Blues made a lightning fast start and were ahead within 90 seconds when a Ross Barkley corner was hit by Andreas Christensen and into the lane for Timo Werner, who knocked on the line.

However, Chelsea’s levels dropped shortly after and although Mason Mount had a chance to double his lead, Zenit hit back the level when the dangerous Claudinho hit an excellent post from Douglas Santos.

Barely minutes later, the hosts took the lead when Chelsea’s defense was uncharacteristically separated, allowing Sardar Azmoun to drive through on goal, round Kepa Arrizabalaga and put in an empty goal.

Thomas Tuchel’s team managed to get an even level in the second half thanks to a great team movement that culminated in Werner getting behind Zenit’s back line to make it 2-2 for Romelu Lukaku.

The visitors looked to have stolen all three points when Werner took his second. The German created space for himself in the box from substitute Christian Pulisic’s pass to crush his second and his team’s third.

However, Zenit took a well-deserved point when Magomed Ozdoev smashed in a lovely half volley from the edge of the penalty area in stoppage time.

The result means that Chelsea advance as second, which means that they will face a group winner in the round of 16 – the draw will take place on Monday.

Kepa Arrizabalaga (GK) – 6/10 – Made an important stop to prevent Chelsea from going down 3-1 during a period where his defense simply stopped defending. Another excellent save stopped Azmoun’s nod from entering. Got a flat hand to the third goal but could not keep it away.

Cesar Azpilicueta (CB) – 6/10 – Read the game well and make some important interventions.

Andreas Christensen (CB) – 6/10 – Good flick at the nearest post to set up the opener. Should have been more commanding when the defense had a meltdown towards the end of the first half.

Malang Sarr (CB) – 4/10 – Looked at the sea when Chelsea lost control. Got a little better in the second half but will not start any big matches soon.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (RWB) – 5/10 – Went into the book for a late challenge on Douglas. Made no major impact.

Reece James (CM) – 6/10 – Interestingly, placed in the central midfield on his 22nd birthday. Showed some nice details when you pressed it.

Ross Barkley (CM) – 4/10 – Caught sleeping on the ball for Zenit’s second. Could not positively affect the process and left after an hour.

Saul Niguez (LWB) – 4/10 – Showed good awareness at one point to cut a dangerous ball over the goal, but the left wing he shared with Sarr was a big problem for Chelsea all night. Produced some particularly unplanned crosses.

Mason Mount (RW) – 7/10 – Took good positions with some excellent movements. Should have put their team to 2-0 with a decent chance in the first half.

Romelu Lukaku (ST) – 7/10 – Some rusty touches and twists nullified some good openings. Had the easy task of turning into an empty goal from Werner’s pass for his fifth goal of the season and his first since September against the same opposition.

Timo Werner (LW) – 8/10 – The right place at the right time to secure Chelsea’s first for the night. Did well to get behind Zenit’s defense and provide Lukaku with the equalizer.

Christian Pulisic (RWB) – 7/10 – Provided the winning assist of the match by beating Werner.

Hakim Ziyech (AM) – 5/10

Kai Havertz (ST) – 5/10

Marcos Alonso (LWB) – 5/10
