Paris Saint-Germain have reached out to Zinedine Zidane in an attempt to prepare for the possible departure of current manager Mauricio Pochettino.
As 90min revealed on Monday, Pochettino is one of Manchester United’s main goals to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who left the club on Sunday. Alongside Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers, Pochettino would be ready to move to Old Trafford immediately if the right offer came.
Pochettino is known to be worried in Paris and anxious to return to the Premier League, and United’s interest seems to have worried PSG as ESPN reports that they have contacted Zidane pending Pochettino’s resignation.
Although the Argentine has not explicitly asked to leave, there is an acceptance that he can be controlled by United and PSG want to ensure that they are prepared for that eventuality – something that United could have done, but failed, in Solskjaer’s case.
In fact, Le Parisien states that PSG have had a lot of contact with Zidane in recent months. The former Real Madrid boss is PSG’s preferred replacement for Pochettino and Zidane is known for also wanting to move to the Parc des Princes.
Marca even goes so far as to say that they inside PSG’s locker room believe that Zidane will come sooner rather than later.
All this is due to United making an official move for Pochettino – something that according to sources has not happened yet.
The Red Devils have given Michael Carrick the lead while looking for a new boss. They have publicly stated that they are looking for an interim manager to take control until the end of the season, but it is understood that they would be prepared to hire a permanent manager immediately if the right candidate is available.
Pochettino has not yet made himself fully available, but his concerns in Paris are no secret. He has a frosty relationship with club director Leonardo and has failed to settle in the French capital.
He is keen to move back to the Premier League and has long had an eye on the United gig, and there is an awareness that Pochettino may not get another chance to move to Old Trafford if he rejects their progress this time around.
