Ralf Rangnick “did not like” Man Utd’s performance in Newcastle “at all”

Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick admitted that he “did not like” his players’ performance in the 1-1 draw against Newcastle.

The Red Devils worked for much of the match at St James’ Park and were indebted to a fantastic late save from David de Gea – one who saved a point from a match that Newcastle will feel they should have won on the game balance.

United struggled to put the Magpies, who are in the relegation zone and low on confidence, under some form of persistent pressure, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all struggling to gain a foothold in the match.

After the final whistle, Rangnick admitted to Sky Sports that he was not quite impressed with his players – and simply said that they need to do better.

“No, I did not like it at all,” said the German. “We tried to get better at controlling matches. Today we did not control the match, apart from very few moments, at all. It was about energy, about physicality and who wins the second balls.

“In all these areas, we were not at our best today. In the end, we got a point, that’s what’s good. But the overall performance needs to get better.”

Asked if he felt United went without a match in 16 days had affected performance, Rangnick continued: “It’s also a matter of rhythm but we should not look for excuses.

“We have to get better, we have to become more physical and precise when we are in possession of the ball, today I was not happy with our performance whether we had the ball or when we had to press and back pressure.

“It’s about sprint, it’s again about energy, in what kind of energy mode we play with the ball and against the ball.”

The points keep United at seven, after a resurgent Arsenal – which currently occupies the last Champions League qualifier – with seven points, although they have two games left after the last games against Brentford and Brighton were suspended due to positive Covid-19 tester.
