Ralf Rangnick dissects “annoying” aspects of Man Utd’s performance

Ralf Rangnick admitted that Manchester United was too “sloppy” with missed chances to score against Young Boys and he thought it was “annoying” by the way that his team lost the ball too easily during the whole match, which is how the equalizer in a 1-1 draw was done.

Rangnick selected a heavily rotated team with 11 changes from the lineup that beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, both to rest the established players and provide playing time for them on the outskirts.

“I was fully aware before the match that this team had not played together, not only in terms of formation but also as a team,” he told BT Sport. “The first half hour we did quite well, we had some unforced errors even during the first 30 minutes but we had at least control over the match.

“I think we should have been up at least 2-0, if not 3-0. We had two great chances, one from Amad [Diallo] and the other from Juan Mata. But we did not score [and] we were a bit sloppy with those situations – a third with Anthony Elanga in the second half.

“We could have scored three or four goals, but obviously after we conceded the equalizer, we did not defend ourselves high enough or proactively and could also have conceded two or three goals.”

After failing to take his own chances, Rangnick was also disappointed to see United invite pressure on themselves by doing things with the ball he had advised the players from.

“What was really a little annoying was the way we gave away the goal. We played too many balls into the first line of their press area – this was also the case with the goal we conceded,” he explained, breaking down the details.

“We could have easily cleared the ball and when we recorded the ball in the second or third line we were always dangerous. I told them before the match but they still played the ball in that position and [Young Boys] just waited for it – it was more or less an urgent invitation. “
