Ralph Hasenhuttl reveals that Tino Livramento may need surgery and be gone for “a year”

Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has admitted right-back Tino Livramento may need surgery on his injured knee.

The 19-year-old has played at St. Mary’s this season since his £ 5million move from Chelsea last summer, but he has not been with the Saints since the Boxing Day victory at West Ham.

The reserve option Yan Valery filled in the FA Cup’s third round victory over Championship team Swansea, but after he was sent off for two bookable offenses, captain James Ward-Prowse was forced to fill in as right back.

Hasenhuttl revealed at his post-match press conference that he was worried about the extent of Livramento’s injury.

“The meniscus injury, even if it is light … I know this from my own son, it was a year away,” he said.

“We do not know. Right now we are trying without surgery, but we have to see how serious it is. It is always an alarm for me when they (the medical team) do not want to talk.

“It’s not good when they do not come to me. But I will go to them every day to ask them.”

Speaking about the possibility of Ward-Prowse covering the right-back again in the meeting with Brentford on Tuesday night, Hasenhuttl said: “I will ask my captain what he says.”

The match in Swansea was played behind closed doors according to the current rules of the Welsh Government. Saint’s Austrian coach added: “It was a strange situation because we are not used to it anymore.

“But I know we can fight. I know we have a team with passion and a high workload, but the matches this week are coming very quickly.

“It will not be easier with Brentford on Tuesday.”
