Real Madrid bring Michael Edwards closer after Liverpool’s resign

4

Real Madrid hope that Michael Edwards will be their new sports director when he leaves his role at Liverpool at the end of the season.

The 42-year-old announced last month that this campaign would be his last at Anfield, which will put an end to a hugely successful period that has led the club to recruit such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.

The Independent reports that Liverpool’s operations and review of their recruitment department have impressed Madrid club president Florentino Perez, and he is keen to bring Edwards to the Santiago Bernabeu to oversee a change in transfer policy.

Spanish clubs have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic and this has forced Madrid to re-evaluate its strategy in the transfer market.

They will still chase big names but Perez hopes that Los Blancos by appointing Edwards will have an edge over their rivals by recruiting slightly lesser known players who are ready to take the step and star of an elite club – Liverpool’s move for Salah and Mane seen as the prime example of this type of strategy.

While Edwards recently declined to approach Newcastle, the report adds that he has not turned off talk of a move to Spain.

Madrid hope that the appeal of working in the Spanish capital and having such control in another big club will ultimately win over Edwards.

Edwards has helped monitor the most successful period in Liverpool’s modern history, winning the Champions League 2019 before their first Premier League title a year later.
