Roberto Mancini responds to speculation about becoming Man Utd coach

Roberto Mancini has ruled out taking over as the next permanent Manchester United coach this summer, promising his loyalty to Italy ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Ralf Rangnick will be responsible for United until the end of the season, then he will take on a consulting role and the club will appoint a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers are United’s preferred candidates. Rangnick has also not excluded himself from staying as head coach for a little longer than six months. But ex-Manchester City boss Mancini was also surprisingly linked with the job at the end of last month.

The Italian, who guided City to the success of the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League title in 2012 – the club’s first silver medal in decades – has re-emerged as one of the best coaches in world football after his success with Italy, which culminated in winning the European Championship. 2020.

Mancini has now described speculation about an “oral agreement” as “all false”.

He told the Gazzetta dello Sport: “An oral agreement with a Premier League club? Everything is false. My only goal is to take me to the World Cup and be able to win it.”

Italy must, despite conquering Europe in the summer, successfully navigate the UEFA play-offs if they are to book a place in the 2022 World Cup next winter. Portugal are among those who stand in the way and ensure that at least one of the last two European Championship winners will not be in Qatar.

Mancini left Etihad Stadium in 2013, was sacked after finishing second behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s United in the Premier League title competition and lost the FA Cup final to Wigan. He continued to coach Galatasaray, Inter and Zenit St Petersburg before taking the job in Italy in 2018.
