Rodolfo Pizarro will leave Inter Miami and return to Monterrey on loan

Inter Miami playmaker Rodolfo Pizarro will return to Monterrey on loan in January, according to reports.

The 27-year-old joined the Herons as a designated player (DP) in February 2020 ahead of his first season, and is reunited with former Rayados boss Diego Alonso – the Uruguayan has since been replaced by Phil Neville.

Pizarro enjoyed a glittering period in the Liga MX and won a number of team and individual awards, but has so far failed to produce in Major League Soccer, registering just seven goals and nine assists in 47 appearances for Inter Miami.

The Mexican international was originally linked with a return to the Liga MX as early as June, although Neville ruled it out at the time, saying Pizarro was a “big part” of his plans.

But Neville seems to have changed his mind now. According to the Miami Herald, Pizarro will rejoin Monterrey on loan with an option to make the move permanent.

Should Pizarro leave, he will free up a valuable DP spot for Neville to add more quality to his roster, undergoing significant surgery ahead of the 2022 season after missing the MLS Cup play-offs this time around. Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi will be the club’s remaining DPs, although the latter was left unprotected during the recent MLS Expansion Draft.

Scottish winger Lewis Morgan and Argentine forward Julian Carranza have already ridden for the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union respectively. The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder Jean Mota has been Heron’s most notable arrival during the winter so far, when he came from Santos.

Inter Miami begins its 2022 MLS campaign at home against the Chicago Fire on Saturday, February 26th.
