Romelu Lukaku insists that Chelsea are the “hunters” in the Premier League title competition

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has insisted that the Blues are now the “hunters” in the Premier League title race, and stays within six points of the leader Manchester City as a result of Boxing Days 3-1 victory against Aston Villa away.

It ended a series of two consecutive games without a win for Chelsea and was only a second Premier League win in the last five games, which had served to open a gap at the top of the table. But when Lukaku now shoots back, he hopes that this can be the beginning of a good race to chase City.

The Belgian played the entire second half against Villa when he returned from Covid-19 isolation and did what proved to be the decisive goal. It was his first for Chelsea in any competition since September after losing something after a transfer of 97.5 million pounds from Inter.

“I think I needed an achievement like this. The manager has his reasons but I continued to work hard”, Lukaku reflected after the match, via “It is a good win and personally I am happy for myself. Balls from crosses and the movement in the box – I try to be less static.

“I think we are the hunters now. It is obvious that the latest results for us were not good. Now we are hunting. We have to treat every match as a final. Today we had to do a job and win the match.”

Chelsea are next in action at home against Brighton on December 29. Liverpool will have faced Leicester the day before, while City are in action the same night against Brentford. The matches continue when Chelsea host Liverpool in a major clash at Stamford Bridge on 2 January.
