Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s confident fights are behind him

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has admitted that he is no longer worried about his nasty Achilles injury and that he is simply enjoying the chance to play football again.

Now 25, Loftus-Cheek is brilliantly back at Stamford Bridge after some challenging years. He suffered the serious injury in May 2019 and did not return for more than 12 months, after which he failed to set the world on fire on loan with Fulham.

Thomas Tuchel gave the midfielder a way back to the first team in Chelsea and Loftus-Cheek has not looked back since. In Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Malmö – his first Champions League appearance in six years – Loftus-Cheek was the star of the program and proved why so many fans want to see him kept in the starting eleven.

“I feel good physically and mentally, I have left my injury behind,” said Loftus-Cheek after the match (via the club’s official website). “It does not even come into my head now. I play freely and I can concentrate on football and soccer just so I am in a good place.

“I will try to continue to develop. I am grateful for the time I have on the field and I will only continue to give my best.”

During the match, Chelsea were dominant but struggled to assert themselves in the final third, with the match’s only goal from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s perfect cross for Hakim Ziyech early in the second half.

“The whole team grew into the match,” Loftus-Cheek continued. “We started to get used to where we could find space and where the gaps would penetrate so that we could create chances.

“It was tough for us to break them down and another day we would get away with many more goals but above all three points.

“Goals like ours will break down any team with the way we played it, it’s hard to stop. With the pace with Callum too and Hakim coming in the box, that’s what we do in training and he’s finished it right. Good.”
