Ryan Sessegnon hopes Antonio Conte can “kickstart” his Spurs career

Ryan Sessegnon says he is hopeful that Antonio Conte’s arrival as Tottenham coach can help him kick-start his career.

The 21-year-old was seen as one of English football’s brightest future prospects during his time at Fulham, which gave him a transfer to Spurs, but injuries and lack of opportunities have caused his share to fall.

Before his replacement appearance against Leeds this weekend, the only matches Sessegnon had played this season were the two Europa Conference League qualifiers against Pacos de Ferreira.

But with a wing-back system now in place under his new Italian coach, Sessegnon believes he can take hold and make an impact.

He said: “For me it’s huge, you say you should really kickstart your career because it has been a stop-start since I have been in the club. It is a great opportunity and I look forward to it.

“When I was at Fulham I was young and played every game. In football it does not always go the way you want, ups and downs in your career. This could be a chance to kickstart my career. I just look forward to the future now.

“We do a lot of tactical work on the pitch. It is very clear. We have driven a lot on the physical side.”

Asked if he thought he had to leave Tottenham, Sessegnon added: “Never, it never hit me in the head … I never thought I thought I would have to leave the club permanently.

“It’s been tough [injuries]. It’s a time now when I can really get started and show what I can do. “

Sessegnon made 12 appearances during the 2019/20 season for Spurs and scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich. Last term, he went on loan to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, where he impressed with two goals in 23 league matches.

Tottenham face Mura on Thursday in the Conference League, where they can qualify for the knockout stage if they win and Rennes beat Vitesse.
