The new NWSL expansion team San Diego Wave FC acquired Abby Dahlkemper from North Carolina Courage on Monday. The Courage will receive $ 190,000 in allocation money and San Diego’s natural draft pick in the first round of 2023 in the deal.

She will be Wave’s first official player as they prepare for their debut in the 2022 season.

“Abby is one of the best midfielders in the world and a proven winner at the club and international level. We look forward to welcoming her to San Diego and our club,” said team president Jill Ellis.

Dahlkemper ended 2021 with Houston after North Carolina switched the 28-year-old player to Dash for $ 25,000 in allocation money as the first part of the three-way trade. Before the jump, she played with Courage for five seasons, where she won three NWSL shields and three NWSL championships.

The player has also played with the American women’s national team since 2016 and recorded the most minutes of all players during the triumphant 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign in France.

“I’ve been following Abby’s career for a long time and always admired her qualities as a midfielder,” said Wave FC head coach Casey Stoney.

“She has had a fantastic career with the USA and in the NWSL, and I trained against her last year when she played in England. She is a top player who I feel has a lot to offer any team on the pitch and in the locker room. These qualities will “To be of great value to our club as we build a team to be competitive in this league. I look forward to working with her on a daily basis.”

The team will play their debut season in their temporary home, Torero Stadium. The club revealed that their weapons and permanent location will be announced at a later date.

The Wave joins the league with Angel City FC.
