Saphir Taider reveals that he “favors” a return to CF Montreal

Midfielder Saphir Taider has expressed his desire to return for a second period with CF Montreal.

The Algerian national team player previously had a productive stay in the Canadian club between 2018 and 2020, scoring 22 goals and 22 assists in 86 matches in all competitions.

He has since played in Saudi Arabia for Al Ain FC but left the club after just seven matches due to reported payment problems.

Taider spoke to Jean-François Téotonio from La Presse about his future and named a return to Montreal as his preferred next move for family reasons.

“I would favor Montreal over all the other offers I can have because my family feels so good there, and so do I,” he said (via MLSsoccer.com). “When you have a family, you really prioritize the family aspect more than anything else.”

Apart from his previous successes in MLS with Montreal, Taider also has player experience with Serie A giants Inter Milan, as well as Sassuolo, Bologna and French Grenoble.

Still only 29 years old, it is unclear whether Taider would require a contract with a designated player (DP) as he did during his previous period. The only existing DP on Montreal’s list is Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama.

However, there is no doubt that his return would give a boost to Wilfried Nancy, who is preparing for his second season as head of Montreal.

During his debut campaign in dugout, the Frenchman led his side to 10th place in the Eastern Conference, but only missed the playoffs on the last day of the regular season.

Montreal still managed the CONCACAF Champions League qualifier and beat the tough rivals Toronto FC 1-0 in the final of the Canadian Championship.

Nancy’s side will start their 2022 MLS campaign away in Orlando City on February 27 before hosting the Philadelphia Union on March 5.
