Sean Davis completes Nashville SC transfer via free agency

Nashville SC have completed the signing of free agent Sean Davis, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old midfielder arrives in Tennessee on a three-year contract with a club option until the 2025 season.

Davis head previously spent his entire career with the New York Red Bulls and signed his first home-grown contract ahead of the 2015 season after coming through the academy system. In total, he made 208 appearances for the club – second only to Bradley Wright-Phillips (240) and Luis Robles (281) – winning two Supporters’ Shield titles and captaining the Red Bulls.

“Sean is an amazing leader who contributes so much on and off the field,” Nashville general manager Mike Jacobs said in an official club announcement. “He has the ability to influence play on both sides of the ball, and we’re so excited to add him to our squad.”

The deal means Nashville is bringing in one of the most valuable players in the MLS free agent market, with Davis adding even more experience to Gary Smith’s midfield alongside Dax McCarty and Anibal Godoy.

Davis is best known for his relentless pace and defensive ability. The three-time USMNT midfielder made more tackles (146) than any other player in MLS 2021, while he was ranked first among Red Bulls players for press (683), interceptions (95) and recovery (480).

Davis also managed more passes (1,214) and progressive passes (190) for the Red Bulls and will offer Nashville extra ball safety in midfield.

Nashville – who are switching to the Western Conference for the 2022 campaign after the arrival of Charlotte FC – have so far been a huge success in the MLS, reaching the playoffs in each of their first two campaigns.

The Tennessee club has benefited most from recruiting MLS veterans and using their experience and expertise to watch matches and pick up results against the odds. This season, they reached the Eastern Conference semifinals before losing to the Philadelphia Union on penalties.

Nashville begins its 2022 campaign away at the Seattle Sounders on February 28th.
