Sergino Dest misses USMNT November World Cup qualifier

USMNT and Barcelona defender Sergino Dest will miss the upcoming round of World Cup qualifiers against Mexico and Jamaica after suffering a back injury while on club duty. He has not been included in the list of 25 players that coach Gregg Berhalter mentioned as a result.

The 21-year-old, who was expected to take part in Barcelona’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Dynamo Kiev, sat as an unused replacement instead as a result of his latest injury.

Barcelona have confirmed that even the right-back will miss Saturday’s trip to Celta Vigo.

“Dest has pain in the lower back,” the club said in a statement on Thursday. “He is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”

The news comes as a blow to the American men’s national team after the La Liga defender played an integral part in their success against Mexico during the 2021 summer tournaments.

Until his knock, Dest had played regularly for Barcelona this season. He made 13 appearances in all competitions and was the right winger in recent weeks.

USMNT must now face North American rivals and CONCACAF team leader Mexico on November 13 without Dest, among several other injured players.

Apart from Dest, Gio Reyna, a crucial figure for USMNT, will not be on the American side during the November qualifiers after suffering from a tendon problem.

Tyler Adams, John Brooks, DeAndre Yedlin, Jordan Pefok and Weston McKennie, on the other hand, are all a yellow card from a suspension on a match, and given the already limited number of players available, a loss of just one change the lineup completely.

Players will report to the team on November 8 to begin the camp before the decisive qualifiers against Mexico and Jamaica.

The American team is currently in second place in the table with 11 points in six games and a record of 3-2-1. USMNT had a rocky start to the late qualifiers in 2021 and fought early against El Salvador and Panama.
