Simeone on why he does not shake Klopp’s hand

Diego Simeone has said he will not shake Jurgen Klopp’s hand after Atletico Madrid’s match against Liverpool because he believes the gesture is “fake”.

The Argentine avoided the pleasant after the match in his last Champions League meeting two weeks ago by rushing straight down the Wanda Metropolitano tunnel, which made Klopp a little puzzled.

The Liverpool boss played down the notions of some bad blood between the two after that match, and Simeone has explained at a press conference before the match before the return match why he is so reluctant to shake hands with his opponent.

“I do not like the greeting after the match because they are the emotions from two sides in different emotional senses,” he said.

“I know in the UK it is a custom and a sign of respect, but I do not share it and I do not like the falsehood it may contain so I behave as I feel.

“I do not know Klopp as a person so well but I know that he is a fantastic coach who has done a fantastic job in every club he has been in.”

Liverpool and Atletico meet on Wednesday for the fourth time in three seasons. Simeone’s team beat the Reds in the last sixteenth stage of the Champions League during the 2019/20 season, even though they were beaten 3-2 by Klopp’s men in their last group game.

But Simeone insists he is not looking for revenge and that he is simply looking forward to a “good match”.

“There are two fantastic arenas with two fantastic supporters with two clubs that want to continue to grow globally so I think it is normal to be considered a good match,” he said.

“It’s not about getting back to anyone, in football there is not. There is no feeling of ‘Let’s get back to them’.

“It’s a new match and any result tomorrow will be the consequences of that match and not the match that happened a year ago – although the match a year ago will remain in the memory of Atletico Madrid fans.”
