Steph Houghton signs the contract for Man City

Manchester City captain Steph Houghton has signed an extension of his contract at Academy Stadium.

The deal will mean that the veteran defender will remain in the club at least into a ninth season, after joining when they reformed a women’s team in 2014.

Houghton turns 34 in April but her presence at the club is still extremely important, as evidenced by how the team fought without her as a result of a long injury absence recently – she made her long-awaited comeback in the Continental Cup this week.

“I’m happy to sign an extension here at City,” she told the club’s official website. “Once the talks started, it was just a result and it was the easiest decision I ever made, to connect my future to this football club and continue on this incredible journey.

“It has been a really good week as I also made a comeback from injury – it has been a really tough four months, but I’m just so happy to be back on the pitch now.

“The eight years I’ve been here so far have flown by – when people say how long it’s, I really can not believe it! For me, it has always been about being in Manchester City and being a part of this club, for now and for the future.

“That’s why I wanted to get involved – to really show my loyalty to my team, to my club and to everyone who has helped me along the way so far.”

Lucy Bronze also made her comeback recently after recovering from knee surgery and City are hoping for a much improved second half of the season.

The 2016 champions were as low as ninth in the WSL table at one stage, having won just one of their first five matches – they lost as many league matches during the first month of the season as in the previous two together.

But a city that is improving has now won its last three WSL matches on bounce to climb up to five, and only two points from the Champions League places.
