Steven Gerrard misses two games after testing positive for Covid-19

Steven Gerrard will not be in Aston Villa’s next two Premier League matches after testing positive for Covid-19, the club has announced.

Gerrard will miss the second match at home against Chelsea and Tuesday’s away match against Leeds United.

“Aston Villa can confirm that head coach Steven Gerrard will not be able to attend our next two Premier League matches with Chelsea and Leeds United as he will be isolated after testing positive for Covid-19,” the club revealed in a statement.

The news comes after Villa’s home game against Burnley last weekend was postponed due to the high number of positive Covid-19 tests among the Villa squad.

The villa’s meeting with Chelsea is one of only six Premier League matches still scheduled to continue on the second day of Christmas.

Gerrard’s team match in Leeds on December 28 may soon be postponed as well, however, after the Yorkshire club reported a Covid outbreak and then saw their trip to Liverpool on the second day of Christmas interrupted.

The Premier League also agreed to postpone Wolves vs Watford and Burnley vs Everton due to the ongoing outburst.

Steven Gerrard has been vocal about the Covid crisis as Villa navigate the situation.

“We had a situation this weekend where one of the players was reluctant to get out of his car because he had some symptoms and he has a young family, and you can fully understand his view of his situation,” said Gerrard.

“This is a guy who has a young family, it’s Christmas, and this is the situation everyone is in. Nobody wants to get this virus. Everyone wants to protect their own families. This is our job and your priority will always be to be your family, of course it is.

“Thankfully he was tested after and he had no situation, but that player would not have been available to me on the day, and these are the small situations that people do not see. We have a great responsibility to listen to the players and deal with each situation when it gets in your way. ”

A total of 25 Boxing Day matches over the four best divisions in English football have been postponed after two more Football League matches were canceled.
