Aston Villas manager Steven Gerrard has told his new bosses that he is interested in recruiting more players from his former club, Rangers.
Gerrard left Ibrox to replace Dean Smith at Villa and took all the staff in the back room with him. Now he is aiming for further reunions with some of his ex-players.
Sources close to both clubs have confirmed for 90 minutes that January is approaching. Gerrard remains respectful of Rangers and does not want to hurt that relationship, but that will not stop him from taking a step forward on some of his previous allegations.
He believes that up to half a dozen of his previously starting XIs are capable of playing in the Premier League. Currently, his main goals are the highly ranked defender Nathan Patterson and the Finnish international midfielder Glen Kamara.
Ryan Kent and Borna Barisic are also in his thoughts, but Rangers will not allow their first team squad to be decimated in January.
Gerrard is currently evaluating his Villa players, but he already believes that the pursuit of Patterson and Kamara should be one of the club’s priorities for transfers.
He also believes that if the Villans want to land Patterson, they will have to tie up a deal in January because some of Europe’s elite are now chasing the 20-year-old.
We have previously revealed that Manchester United had joined Everton in the hunt for the youngster, and the Red Devils even considered a bid for him late in the summer after failing to sign Kieran Trippier.
Now we can confirm that some of the continent’s top clubs have also looked at Patterson this season, including Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.
The player is a big fan of Gerrard after he gave him his debut at Ibrox and he would have a hard time refusing to reconnect. The same goes for Kamara, who has emerged as a real talent under the new Villa boss.
Kamara signed a long-term contract this summer, but Gerrard believes that the former Arsenal man can be of great importance – together with Patterson. Villa were already aware of the midfielder’s talents before their new boss arrived, after scouting him during the summer.
It would take more than £ 30 million to land Kamara and Patterson, but Gerrard has told Villa not to miss either player, as he believes both could be achieved in January.
