2021 has been one of the strangest years in the history of the Premier League.
After months of eerie matches without fans, we finally looked to return to a semblance of normality – and then came the stream of launches due to the corona virus.
Although off-field problems have often caused distractions, there has been much to be excited about on the pitch.
Here are the 11 players who have received 90 minutes from our seats more often than anyone else in the last 12 months …

Edouard Mendy (GK) – Few had heard of Edouard Mendy when he arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2020, but he is impossible to ignore now. Perhaps the best goal scorer in the league, he has consistently posted superior numbers to Ederson and Alisson 2021.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB) – After a shake-up at the end of 2020, Trent Alexander-Arnold has returned with revenge this year. Few Premier League players hit the ball sweeter and he has also impressed defensively in recent times.
Ruben Dias (CB) – The football player of the year in FWA 2020/21 has continued to dramatically improve Man City’s back line over the past 12 months. There are few, if any, inescapable for Pep Guardiola – as FPL coaches know all too well – but Dias definitely fits this description.
Antonio Rudiger (CB) – Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Stamford Bridge this year coincided with Antonio Rudiger becoming one of the best defenders on the planet. However, do not expect to find him in next year’s team for the year, with a departure from Stamford Bridge that looks increasingly likely.
Joao Cancelo (LB) – Cancelo has lit up the Premier League from left-back this year, which is not an easy task. Much is made of the Portuguese’s skill in ball possession but he is also an unbeatable presence backwards.

Declan Rice (CM) – Declan Rice had its doubters on their way into 2021, but finding someone who refuses to board the hype train nowadays is almost impossible. Rice can do anything. Expect him to rise to even higher heights in 2022.
Rodri (CM) – Finding Fernandinho’s replacement has always been a source of concern for Man City fans. Over the past year, Rodri has finally proven that he is ready to step into the timeless Brazilian’s shoes, set the pace and break up the game with ease every week.
Ilkay Gundogan (CM) – Ilkay Gundogan has had a career-best in 2021, scored 17 goals for club and country and registered nine assists. His performances have seen him rewarded with the captain’s armband on occasions this season as well.

Mohamed Salah (RW) – It must be Mohamed Salah. Superior Premier League player 2021, his goals and assists confuse the mind and he shows no signs of slowing down in 2022.
Phil Foden (ST) – A controversial inclusion as Diogo Jota has had a fantastic start to the season, but for a long life in 2021, Phil Foden just gets the nod. It has been a really full-grown year for him and he has produced a number of match-winning screenings.
Son Heung-min (LW) – Son Heung-min has had some breaks in 2021 but even when he has not played well, the South Korean has still delivered for his club with some important goals. A couple of players drive him close, but Son has just done enough to get into our starting eleven.
