All Serie A players must be fully vaccinated if they want to continue playing in the Italian top class as the country’s government plans to introduce stricter Covid-19 laws.
The emergence of the Omicron variant has kick-started a new wave across Europe and Italian ministers have drawn up new plans in an effort to limit transmission and ease the burden on hospitals.
As noted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, there will be new rules affecting football in Italy, where the government requires that everyone who wants to enter a sports arena – gyms, arenas, changing rooms, swimming pools, etc. – must be fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 in recent weeks.
Top football players will not be given an exception and have been told that if they have not recently overcome the virus, they must be fully vaccinated if they want to continue playing in Italy at any level.
It should not be a significant problem in Serie A, where 98% of players were fully vaccinated on 17 December.
Juventus midfielder Giorgio Chiellini is one of many who use his platform to encourage the Italian people to get vaccinated, and wrote on Twitter: “Let us all play our part and vaccinate for ourselves and to protect the most vulnerable people.”
The stadiums will also be limited to 50% capacity according to the new rules, which will enter into force on January 10, 2022. The idea of dropping to just 5,000 fans was proposed but eventually rejected.
The Italian top class has the highest vaccination rate in Europe’s major leagues. Their 98% surpass the Premier League, where about 68% of players have received both doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.
The English Football League also recently confirmed that 25% of players had expressed their intention not to get vaccinated against the virus.
