The latest on Reece James hoarding injury

Chelsea full-back Reece James is set to be out for a while after suffering a hamstring tear during his side’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.

James lasted less than half an hour against the Seagulls, limped off and was replaced by Marcos Alonso.

After the match, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel described the injury as a “big blow”, and according to, the prognosis is not good.

They report that James has suffered a torn hoarding, although it is not yet certain what degree of tear he is suffering from. Once the severity of the damage has been determined, a more accurate assessment of a return date can be made.

Regarding the forecast, Tuchel stated that they will soon have a clearer indication of the time frame for his absence:

“Reece has a hamstring injury, muscle, but the examination is always a little later. The pictures will be better if we wait. We will find out more today.”

However, James will most likely be missing for the foreseeable future, as he joins Chelsea’s ever-growing injury list. With Ben Chilwell out for the season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury against Juventus in the Champions League, Alonso is now Tuchel’s only recognized full-back.

Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Cesar Azpilicueta and Saul Niguez all have experience in the role as well, but James’ absence is still a big blow as he has been in the shape of his life during the first half of the season.

The English national team player has registered four goals and five assists in 16 Premier League matches this semester, and has excelled defensively.

It’s not just at full-back that Chelsea have selection problems either. Thiago Silva and Timo Werner both missed the Brighton match, while Andreas Christensen was replaced by Trevoh Chalobah after suffering a back injury.

This leaves the Blues with a mountain to climb if they are to get a result against Liverpool on January 2. The match is important for both teams as Premier League leader Man City has opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the table over Christmas.
