Premier League chairman Gary Hoffman will step down just 18 months after taking the job following a backlash from clubs following the controversial Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle United.
A consortium of Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media completed their £ 305m acquisition of Magpies in October.
Sky News reports that Hoffman is expected to quit after being reviewed for the Premier League’s handling of the takeover, with an announcement that will potentially come in the coming days.
The report adds that he could change if a sufficient number of top clubs tried to persuade him to stay on the job, but the chance of that is small.
The news comes with a comprehensive review of the regulation of English football which will be published next week by the former Minister of Sports Tracey Crouch.
There, Crouch will recommend that the Independent Regulator for English Football (IREF) be established. The IREF will be given new powers to regulate the governance and ownership of professional football clubs.
Hoffman and the Premier League came under fire for not keeping other sides informed of the progress of Newcastle’s takeover.
Some club executives were offended that the purchase had to be carried out at all in light of the Saudi regime’s poor human rights record, even though these complaints fell on deaf ears due to confidentiality obligations.
Hoffman is currently chairman of the online bank Monzo, having worked for Barclays and chairing Visa Europe.
The 61-year-old took over the Premier League role in June 2020 before English top football resumed after the first lockdown of the corona virus.
