Brentford head coach Thomas Frank has revealed how he thinks the bees can compete with some of the richest football clubs in the world.
The West London side have one of the smallest budgets in the Premier League and were moved up from the Championship with less resources than many other EFL teams.
Brentford were beaten by Brighton – who are among Europe’s biggest spenders since reaching the top flight – and face Manchester City on Wednesday, and Frank gave his thoughts on how Bina can continue to challenge teams with much larger budgets.
“I think it would be almost impossible to be competitive against a team like Man City – not just for one match, of course. In a match, anything can happen,” Frank said at his recent press conference.
“We have seen this season that they lost to Crystal Palace at home where a mistake from them, a goal, a red card [cost them].
“Especially a team like City, they have to be one of the teams with the best statistics against teams at the bottom of the table because they dominate so much.
“But of course against a team like Brighton we did not show it in the first half, but generally before that match both teams had 20 points. I think we have shown that the challenge so far is to make it week by week out for one season, two seasons , three seasons, four seasons. This is where you have to do an incredible job as staff and the players have to do well and hope to build.
“I think it’s possible [to be competitive without spending huge amounts] if you have a clear strategy and work very hard, if you try to develop it piece by piece. ”
