Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is “the most modern coach of modern times”, according to Brentford head coach Thomas Frank.
The Catalan tactician has won a whopping 32 awards as a coach throughout his career with Barcelona’s senior and reserve teams, Bayern Munich and Man City.
Ahead of City’s trip to Brentford, his opponent Frank has paid tribute to Guardiola.
“We play against the team in the division with perhaps the biggest budget, I think [Guardiola] the best coach in modern times definitely, incredible players, and a very specific style of play that actually makes it quite difficult for us to get any of it, Frank said at his pre-match press conference.
“They are so good at holding the ball and they almost never risk it. Of course we can [play] little on the counter. It will be very difficult.
“The good news is that we have done quite well against Liverpool and Chelsea, the other two top teams in the division.
“He is a coach I have studied a lot, especially during his time in Barcelona where I think they were fantastic. I have followed him in Bayern Munich and City. He is a very innovative coach, who always changes positions.
“The structure from behind and the way they keep the ball in the middle phase as well, the breakthroughs, it’s something I’ve studied for several years. It’s very difficult to copy and you need decent players, but it’s nice to get inspiration from it.”
When it was revealed to Frank that he and Guardiola met as two equal managers in the Premier League, he replied: “I agree, we are definitely two Premier League coaches!
“It will be a very good experience to meet him and meet his team. Depending a bit on the result, maybe I should try to forget it as soon as possible or remember it a little longer.”
